Joakim "Zyrhoes" Verngren is a Swedish SMITE player. He is currently playing mid for Team Dignitas.

Biography

Zyrhoes lives in Trollhättan, Sweden.

Zyrhoes started out his competitive SMITE career when he joined SK Gaming in June 2014 playing jungle. Despite being a relative unknown, Zyrhoes was regarded highly immediately after his first appearance. For the next several months, Zyrhoes showed his prowess on not only assassins, but mages such as  Janus. Despite lackluster online stages, he shined as much as the rest of his team individually. SK Gaming barely edged their way to Regionals after the Play-Ins with Aquila, who had defeated Team Coast. SK Gaming then proceeded to make short work of their first opponents at LAN in typical SK fashion. However, they were defeated in a shutout by Aquila. Despite this loss, top analysts believed they were set to take the World Championship with their wealth of experience from veterans Realzx and CaptainTwig.

This perceived dominance ultimately disappointed. SK Gaming defeated We Love Bacon and COGnitive Red in the knockout stage, giving them a bye into the main tournament. Their first matchup was against Titan, formerly Aquila. Titan crushed SK, forcing SK to the third place match, where they were again beaten by COGnitive Red, ending SK's run with a disappointing 4th place finish. Zyrhoes and the team then decided to make the switch to Fnatic. During this time, him and Fnatic midlaner CaptainTwig chose to switch roles, moving Zyrhoes into the mid lane under the belief that CaptainTwig's incredible 1v1 dueling experience in matchups and mechanics as well as Zyrhoes past mage play would benefit the team. Zyrhoes did not disappoint, performing far above expectations and massively outshining the inconsistent CaptainTwig. Despite Zyrhoes's strengths, the rise of the superteam Panthera and longtime rivals Paradigm (once Team SoloMid), eventually overcame Fnatic. Although Fnatic was a top team, they were not regarded as seriously as they had before, beaten by teams European and North American at LAN despite novel picks from Zyrhoes himself such as  Thanatos mid. Zyrhoes was seen as one of the team's strongest players, and with his play at Super Regionals, Fnatic became the Wild Card, beating out Team Eager. However, just as most expected, Fnatic was the weakest North American/European team, placing 5-8th in the World Championship, the only one not to reach at least 4th place.

After this disappointment, Fnatic began to implode. Coach Krett, support Badgah, CaptainTwig and sub Epindary all left the team. Only Badgah and CaptainTwig were replaced, by ranked players BigManTingz and Jifffy. This new team was even more disappointing, with a pathetic seventh place finish in the Spring Split amidst inconsistent performance and even appearances. Fnatic then withdrew from SMITE and the team disbanded, leaving Zyrhoes teamless. Zyrhoes would eventually find a new home as the new solo laner of Cringe Crew, replacing former solo laner Axioz and hopeful TheBigSB. Despite widespread player anticipation, Cringe Crew's win/loss ratio did not improve. Despite Zyrhoes's quick adaptation to the role and his clear skill over Axioz, Cringe Crew was even more inconsistent than before. Their performance was hit-or-miss, with Zyrhoes or any other member often ending up out of position or simply not being able to win the game in tight situations. In the Fall Gauntlet, Cringe Crew placed second behind Team Dignitas. This outcome was controversial, as Zyrhoes's hometown of Trollhättan was hit with a blizzard during the first game, forcing his disconnection from the game and almost certainly forcing a loss. He did not return in the second game, forcing coach and sub Deathiance to play for him. Predictably, Deathiance's skill was below Zyrhoes's, and Cringe Crew lost the second match.

Afterwards, Zyrhoes decided to coach a team to go to Worlds, settling on NRG Esports. The team won the World Championship, marking his third appearance at Worlds (although this would be his first time not appearing as a player). He left to search for opportunities in Season 4, and in the ensuing "Rosterpocalypse", he joined a team with runner-up solo laner Variety, lone Sanguine Esports hunter Arkkyl, and crowd-pleaser jungler and support QvoFred and Trixtank on an unnamed team, later revealed to be the amusingly named Variety's new team.

Trivia

  • Regarded as the only player to have adapted instantly to another role when he switched from jungle to mid on Fnatic, and again switching to solo for Cringe Crew.
  • He is the one of two European players to have attended all 3 World Championships consecutively (CaptainTwig is the other), however, his 3rd appearance was as a coach rather than a player.
  • His name is not pronounced like the English word 'zeroes' (zēˌrōz) with a long e sound, but rather as (zīˌrōz) with long i sound.
  • His brother plays Paladins professionally.
  • Was the namegiver to the team Variety's New Team.
